ARENA Launchpad Grant Opens

Australia’s clean energy startup ecosystem has a new funding opportunity on the table, with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) officially opening applications for its new ARENA Launchpad Startup Funding Round. The program is designed to help early-stage companies accelerate the technical and commercial development of innovative technologies that support Australia’s energy transition.

For founders, entrepreneurs and SMEs developing technologies in renewable energy, electrification, decarbonisation and adjacent sectors, this could be one of the most attractive non-dilutive funding opportunities currently available in Australia.

Key Dates

The Startup Funding Round launched 16 September 2026, with applications due 28 October 2026 at 4:00pm Sydney/Canberra time. Shortlisted applicants are expected to be invited to pitch to ARENA within approximately two weeks of the application closing date, with assessment pitches expected in mid-November 2026. Funding outcomes will be communicated as soon as practicable after the pitch stage.

Startups considering an application should begin preparing immediately, particularly given the level of information required and the likelihood of strong competition.

What’s on Offer?

ARENA has allocated up to $15 million to the inaugural Startup Funding Round. Successful applicants must apply for a Baseline Grant of $500,000, with the option to request an additional Top Up Grant of up to $500,000, creating a potential funding package of up to $1 million per company.

Importantly, there is no matched funding requirement for the baseline grant. However, applicants that can demonstrate their own cash contributions or external support may score more strongly during assessment.

The optional Top Up Grant is intended primarily for deep-tech and capital-intensive ventures that can demonstrate a genuine need for additional funding, such as specialised equipment, advanced prototyping or access to highly specialised expertise.

What Technologies Are ARENA Looking For?

The program is aimed at early-stage Australian companies developing innovative technologies aligned with ARENA’s statutory functions, investment plan and strategic priorities. Applicants must already have demonstrated at least Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 and show a credible pathway to commercialisation. Pure research projects and idea-stage concepts are not eligible.

ARENA’s current strategic priorities include:

  • Ultra low-cost solar
  • Optimising the transition to renewable electricity
  • Commercialising renewable hydrogen
  • Supporting the transition to low-emissions metals
  • Decarbonising transport

More broadly, ARENA is seeking technologies capable of delivering meaningful energy, emissions reduction and economic benefits while helping accelerate Australia’s transition to a decarbonised economy.

Who Can Apply for the ARENA Launchpad Grant?

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold an ABN.
  • Be an Australian incorporated for-profit entity (including some Australian subsidiaries of international companies).
  • Own or develop the relevant technology or solution.
  • Have freedom to operate regarding any relevant intellectual property.
  • Be advancing a technology aligned with ARENA’s remit and strategic priorities.

University spin-outs and research commercialisation companies are eligible, however universities, publicly funded research organisations and government entities cannot apply directly.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through ARENA’s grants management system and include:

  • A completed application form.
  • A pitch deck of up to 10 slides.
  • A short video presentation (maximum two minutes).
  • A conflict of interest declaration.
  • Any essential supporting evidence.

Shortlisted applicants may then be invited to pitch directly to ARENA and its assessment panel before final funding decisions are made.

Assessment will focus on four weighted criteria:

  • Market and technology merit (30%)
  • Team capability and capacity (30%)
  • Activities and business plan (20%)
  • Financials (20%)

How Competitive Will the ARENA Launchpad Grant Be?

Founders should expect this round to be highly competitive.

While $15 million is a significant allocation, the funding structure suggests that only a relatively limited number of companies will receive support. If most successful applicants receive funding packages between $500,000 and $1 million, the number of funded startups is likely to be measured in the dozens rather than the hundreds. This is further reinforced by ARENA’s use of a timebound, ranked assessment process, where applications are ranked against one another and funding decisions may also consider portfolio factors such as technology diversity, geographic spread, founder diversity and strategic alignment.

In practice, startups that are likely to perform best will be those that can clearly demonstrate:

  • A novel and differentiated technology.
  • Evidence of customer demand and market validation.
  • Strong technical and commercial founders.
  • Clear progress beyond the research stage.
  • A credible pathway to scale, investment and commercialisation.

Final Thoughts

The ARENA Launchpad Startup Funding Round represents a significant new source of non-dilutive capital for Australian climate-tech and energy-tech startups. With grants of up to $1 million, no mandatory matching requirement and a strong focus on commercialisation, the program is designed to help promising companies bridge the gap between early technical validation and scalable market deployment. For founders operating in clean energy, electrification, hydrogen, low-emissions industrial processes or transport decarbonisation, this funding round is likely to attract substantial interest and early preparation will be essential.
